Fuel into tank, fuel straight out the carb drain pipes

Post by Zed »

Just put fuel in the tank of my stock Z after the winter and it quickly exited via the carb drain pipes. Grateful if anyone could suggest what's going on here and what the fix might be?

Given that you had drained the carbs for the Winter, I'd say a stuck open float. First thing to do is take a wooden dowel and 'bang/tap' each of the float bowls. (Had this happen for my 82. No problem after that.) If this doesn't work, you may need to pull the carbs to clean whatever is causing a float to stick open. I'm assuming there is a good filter in the line to catch any little whatever getting from the tank to the carbs.

Many thanks Larry, You gotta love a simple solution. It worked on carbs no. 1 & 2, but the last stuck one, number 3 remains as such. I'll tilt the engine tomorrow and have a better look. Thanks again; dowel rod now added to my tool box.

I have no experience with this issue on the CBX but the principle is the same for any machine with a fuel float bowl. If tapping on the float bowl doesn't do it, sometimes flushing/draining the offending carb can help. For wooden dowel, you can substitute a screwdriver handle.

Be sure to 'tap' it from both sides. Might need a long thin dowel to get at it from the right with a slight hammer tap on the end.
