My theory is to clean the cable and sleeve with something like WD40 or PB Blaster and then use a small bit of lubricant on the cable like white lithium grease on reassemble.

It could also be the speedo itself. There are a couple threads available on that subject.

Cleaned and lubed mine up with teflon lube. The outer was showing its age and looked hard, with a few cracks. This maintenance caused my speedo to bounce, so i went the route of fitting a new Honda inner and outer assembly. I was curious to see what Honda used, so pulled the inner out to check the lube and was quite surprised to see the cable LIGHTLY greased, with a fairly sticky grease.
Hope this helps. Speedo was AS NEW after the cable fitted.

Cleaned speedo cable and case with WD-40, still made noise, cleaned again and used white lithium grease, still makes noise.. can feel the vibration with my hand on cable when riding, also speedo where the cable goes into it was getting warm so I unhooked it for now. Was just wondering if the speedo may need lube inside... and who may do that..

If it is the speedometer itself turn it upside down and a couple drops of lubricating oil in the cable opening might solve the problem.
You can remove the whole gauge console or just the speedo itself. You only want to use a small amount as it can fog up the inside of the lens.
It could also be the speedo drive itself at the wheel.
Here is some great info from Nick about checking that problem.

Re: Speedometer Cable Lube question.. UPDATE

Post by Rocker81 »

Ok took off the speedo, turned it upside down, (like advised) and tried to get a couple drops of oil to find its way into the cable/gears area.. left it overnight.. hit it with a drill and no noise.. Reinstalled it and it works like a champ..
Thanks for the info guys, appreciate it.
