Paint the airbox

Post by Larry G. »

I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to paint the somewhat tired looking airbox on my 79 cbx. Is satin black paint ok or something else better?

Yes, for certain, I do, that is great paint, looks dandy. I definitely suggest a thorough wetsanding of the part before painting to get the paint to sit flat, and you can rub it up with very fine polishing compound and then dressing when finished and it will look great. HOWEVER...

Recently we have been experimenting with heavy rubbing compound on black plastic parts, followed by fine polishing compound, followed by dressing like Mother's Back to Black, and we've got some really nice results with that process too. If you have some handy there's nothing to lose for trying that first, and if you like it, dandy. And if you don't, go to the SEM paint next.

After thinking about painting the airbox I decided to just stick with black to black. I had already using that once but I spent a little more time really rubbing it in and now it looks much better. Done!
