General questions regarding repairs/maintinance

Hey guys,

I don't want to get inappropriate but i just thought I'd get some opinions regarding time to do certain things to a 1982 CBX 1000. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post it either.

I've already asked this on another place on the forum regarding syncing carbs so I'll leave that out. Can anyone estimate the time to change a front tire, a back tire, rebuild a front fork (seals and springs), clean carbs, change breaks and brake lines.

If this is an inappropriate question just let me know. I know these bikes are special and require special skills and experience.

Thanks.

Hi, Nwtk,

While I can't give you shop time for any of those, I can tell you that most all those items are 'normal' things. The carb synching being the exception. Front fork work might see a bit additional charge just for the time to remove them from the bike. All else fork work is very straight forward. (A good shop should do it without removing any body parts. Therefore no particular 'surcharge') Wheels, tires, brakes, brake lines no different than any other bike.

The Honda dealer near me charges 1 hr. labour to change a tire.
If the wheel is off the bike,1/2 hour.

Front and rear tires, on the bike, at least 2 hours. Rebuild front forks on the Pro-Link, 4 hours. Carb rebuild, 10-12 hours off the bike, plus at least 3 hours removal/install and sync. Rebuild front brake system, 5 hours. Rear brake system, 2 hours. Adds up pretty quickly. And all the above plus a few more things need done to any bike that's been sitting for a while.

And don't forget to do the valve adjustment before synchronizing those beautiful Carbs :-)
Thanks,

Thanks guys. Daves, you are right in the ballpark with them.

Got to ride this thing for the first time Saturday. Wow, what a machine! It purrs like a kitten, revs perfectly, great power and it's pretty dang quiet; quieter than my KZ 1000. I can't tell you how much I love it. It'll be with me for a very, very long time.

The owner of the restoration shop road it everyday once they got it running and was most impressed. He'd had a couple in the shop but had never ridden one.

Thanks again, guys!

Glad to hear the shop came through on the repairs.
Probably everyone on this site at one time or another has spent more money on their CBX than they had originally intended.
Funny, it always seems worth it when you twist the grip.

Yes, to get right down to it, I've re-commissioned several nice CBXs that had sat for many years. They all needed the things you described. My bill to the customers was usually in the $2500-$3000 range for all that work. It adds up quickly and owning a classic bike of any kind is a sizeable investment. It's not for the faint of wallet.
