Juan,

'79 (Z model) side panels are matt black, not 100% sure but think '80 (A model) are the same.

Paul.

I own three 80s and two of them were among the first ~1500 or so that were built in Japan. The black bike had been resprayed before I got it so no telling what was original, and has glossy sidecovers. The red one was not resprayed when I first got it (it is now) and I took photos of everything before it was painted, including the sidecovers. Those photos can be found here:

https://noblehops.smugmug.com/Motorcycl ... /i-856dKR4

These sidecovers in the photos are 422 parts, not sure if Honda ever changed the part number to a 469 series on this, I bet Dave knows though. These were quickly cleaned and mostly dry in these photos, and although it is a little hard to say definitively, if I had to guess I would say these were the same finish as the 79s - a satin/flat black.

I'm certain this topic has been explored before, have a few searches and see what turns up.

P.S. Juan, the stock color for those sidecovers was definitely black, all twin-shock CBXs are the same, the question is, is it satin or glossy finish, and I believe that both were found on the 80s.

I always thought the 79 had Matt black side overs and the 80 had gloss black. That is how I have always seen them.I bought a 80 new and they were gloss black. I am sure there is somebody else that will chime in.

Terry, is your 80 a Marysville bike? And are the sidecovers 469 parts, or 422? Could be that Honda used satin 422 parts while they were being produced in Japan, and switched to glossy when production moved to Ohio. Have a look at my photos just for fun.

Nils, you might be right on that one. I don't think I have ever gotten any Japan bikes.

My NOS 469 side cover is gloss black. Still in the Honda packaging. My NOS 422 side cover is satin black. As Nils said, probably changed types when they moved production.

I just did pull the sidecover off of my black '80, which is #49 of the year, and like my other Japanese bike, it is wearing 422 sidecovers, which I believe to be original to the bike. As prior, these are repainted glossy now (before I owned it), but who knows what they were. My money is on satin :-).

Someone jogged my memory on this. The Japanese bikes had matte black covers and the Marysville bikes had gloss.
Many thanks for jogging my memory :-)

Dear friend,
Thanks for your kindly responses. Definitively the side panels will be black, even in my bike they were painted in red. I would try to reproduce the bright of the plastic panels of the carburetor air chamber (between satin and matt bright).

Yes, at least some red '80s had satin covers. And some clearly had gloss. Either is correct for a red '80. All black ones were gloss. All Marysville bikes had 469 part numbers.
