What kind of paint should I use on a 82 CBX Prolink Engine

Post by ezridermn »

I am going to repaint the engine on my 82 CBX Prolink. I am not going to have it blasted. I am going to thoroughly sand and clean the surfaces I intend to paint. I am thinking of using Eastwood's 2k High Temp Ceramic Aerosol Engine Paint. However, they say not to use it over non-catalyzed materials. Does anyone know whether or not the OEM engine paint was a two part catalyzed material?

Or maybe you have another type of paint you would suggest I consider using. Couple of things I would like you to know before offering up your thoughts. I don't have access to a spray booth or the ability to use a compressor driven paint gun. So I think I need to come up with a rattle can paint solution.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have used PJ1 Fast Black engine paint with good results. Satin finish.
No primer required but 3? light coats.
Not show quality but the rattle can produced nice results.

I used VHT Black Wrinkle paint on my '82 engine.
No primer, just 4 even coats making sure to get an even amount in all the nooks and crannies. Perfect Wrinkle effect and although not stock and not everyone's preference I love the look. When cured by engine heat the finish is almost bullet proof.

I was just about to mention that - that paint is most properly cured with heat. One guy used a heat lamp and moved it all around for a day or two. I had my engine out and humped it to my powdercoater who baked it for me. That VHT stuff is really excellent paint. Check the "Restorations" topic and there are two pinned posts about the process - I did something very similar to what is described there.

Thanks for the information guys. Can you please give me an idea of how many cans of paint I will likely need to get the job done?

Thanks.

I'd get 2 or 3.
