CBX Gauge Restoration - Bringing back the Red - Update & Pri

Post by PRose »

Hey guys,
the following is a long update on my CBX Speedometer and Tachometer Face Plate Restoration
This also applies to the 79 thru 83 CB750F and CB900F bikes which share the same Face Plate design.
I apologize in advance for the length, but it may answer a lot of your questions that I have received.
I will also have this info posted on my website at www.digitalpizza.com

Description:
This is a restoration of the original Honda Face Plate, not a reproduction or overlay or sticker.
I will restore the actual Honda Face Plate that your bike came with from the factory.
I have chosen to restore rather than reproduce because Honda's original face plates were injection molded and are far superior to any plastic available. Plus, the plates have tabs, and recesses molded into them that are almost impossible to duplicate in a re-pop.
I have developed a screening process that was probably used by Honda back when they made these plates.
I strip away the original screen print from the face plate, then I recondition the Face Plate, and re screen the plate with exactly the same print and color that Honda did originally.
Also, I can convert the plate so it will be back lit by removing the silver paint off the back of the plate that Honda painted on from the factory.
This is an option that does not cost extra and can also be lit as is if you prefer.

I can also restore the needles which also fade so that the color matches the Face Plates.
I am also offering to restore the top bezel of the cluster which includes restoring the original black finish and restoring the white lettering of the idiot lights. I can only restore good un damaged bezels however. But if they are scratched, faded, or corroded, no problem, they will look like new after they have been restored.
The same is true with the outer black ring of the CBX gauges.

Pricing is as Follows:

Basic Face Plate Restoration Only - 75.00 per Plate including needles
This option is if you send me your face plates for Restoration.
I will do the Volt Meter for free with both speedo and tach.

Full gauge Restoration
Disassemble, restore face plate, reassemble - 120.00 each for speedo & tach and 75.00 for Volt Meter.
So, for all three gauges (CBX) = 315.00 including shipping costs back to you via Priority Mail.

Refinishing of the outer Rings for CBX to look like new = 50.00
This includes refinishing the black to the original satin finish and restoring the white lettering on the idiot light lenses.

Deluxe Full Cluster Restoration Package
Includes all services above. - 300.00
This includes the speedo, tach & Volt Meter and refinishing of the rings and the top bezel plate.
This option saves you 65.00

I will have more information in regard to calibration of the speedo and converting the speedo from 80 MPH to 150 MPH in a week or so.
I am working out the calibration details for the conversion.
I am also working on reproducing the needles as well.

I can however convert the 150 MPH to KPH or KPH to MPH faces now.
All of the above prices and services apply to all CBX, 750F, and 900F bikes.

I will have more pictures of the all the gauges over the next few days as well as some pictures of the back lighting.

Thanks guys
And again, sorry for the long read.

Has anyone heard from Pete Rose on the gauge restoration services he offered??

Maybe someone has had this done and could post before and after pictures and comments??

I have sent a PM and left a phone message with no luck of a reply.

Would like some input to plan for a future re-do of a set of gauges.

Thank you.

ZGRAND,

The gauges were done by Pistol Pete per picture notes. His work can be found at web site:

http://www.oldwings.com/

I am still interested to learn if anyone has heard from Pete Rose and if they have had any restoration work done on a set of gauges.

Thank you for the courtesy of your time and a reply.

Regards,

Ricardo

Pistol Pete does the speedos and tachometers.

Pete Rose has indicated he'd also do the voltmeter. I sent him my 3 gauges at the end of November to restore.

November 2012, that is.
I'm counting on them being SPECTACULAR!

But, hey. I'm still working to finish my rolling chassis that I started 3 years ago or so. I figure the gauges will arrive just at the exact moment I need them. :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

Here's the deal on Pistol Pete's gauge restos: What you see in the picture of my bike is what you get - all 3 gauges restored. He is still working on perfecting the voltmeter and it is a TINY bit below the excellent standard of the other two, but perfectly acceptable to me. The thing I like even better about Pete's work is that it's just not a cosmetic restoration - it's a complete mechanical restoration as well. Pete Rose is NOT offering that service with his cosmetic restorations. Pistol Pete turns these gauges around in just a few days. I did the trim ring painting after I got them back, but he will do that as well, if you like. The color of the restored gauges is as close to original as I've seen.

Hello all, I'm currently doing gauge restoration on CBX gauges. Send me some pictures of what you have, what you want and call me we can talk about pricing and turn around time. I did speedometer repair in the 80's and have retired and am looking for something to keep my mind and hand active. I have been doing gauge repair for a year and a half. Call me, Mike 810-599-6285
