Stripped Front Cam Chain Adjuster

Hello,

I'm in the process of assembling the head on my 79 CBX and I found that my front cam chain adjuster is stripped. I'm just curious if anyone has tried fixing this with a time-sert kit? I could only find examples of people fixing it with a helicoil which I'm fine to fall back on if a time-sert won't work.

Thank you.

Yes I have used a time-sert several times on them. Just make sure you buy one that isn’t too long.

Whatever you use, you CANNOT have threads showing in the first maybe 2mm of the hole. If it's a '79, the o-ring on the bolt must seat in a smooth bore. If it's an '80-'82, the bolt has a shoulder on it that has to slip into the end of the tower and an insert with threads at the end will not allow that. It's a process until you get it right. And as Terry said, threads obviously cannot protrude into the bore that the cam chain adjuster rod slides.

Interesting, I don't think time-sert makes an insert short enough then. The smallest they have for m8x1.25 is 8mm which I think is too long even without factoring in the 2mm non threaded section. My bike is a 79. I think I'll have to do a helicoil then since they can be easily trimmed to size. Thanks.
