Replacing clutch rubber blocks

Howdy everyone?
I have my clutch cover off to remove the clutch. Looks like I need a special tool for the center nut. Is that the original nut that’s supposed to be on there? Hard to tell from the parts fiche. And is there no lock washer with this type of nut? Thanks.

That is the correct nut. The washer underneath the nut is spring washer that acts as lock washer. One side is marked “outside” and needs to be installed in that orientation. The shop manual is worth looking at for clutch work.

Make yourself the tool with an appropriate diameter socket and a thin wheel grinder. (Or, a friend with a milling machine.)

Larry, I had thought about it, but ended up ordering the tool.

So I took everything apart and realized that I had 9 clutch rubber blocks and not 6 as I expected for my 1980. Are rubber blocks being sold separately or do I need to buy another set of 6 or 9? Thanks!

Yes as you discovered the 80 has 9 blocks while the 79 has 6 blocks.

You might try Kurt to see if he sells them individually.

Thanks Joe. I forgot that they were available on this side of the Atlantic. I reached out to Kurt and hopefully he sells me 3 blocks and ideally nine of his bolts!

Unless the clutch has been changed, the '79's have 6 dampers, the '80's have 9 and the '81's & '82's have springs instead of the rubber dampers.

Brain fart on my part. For some reason I thought it was the other way round, 6 for 1980 and 9 for the 1979. Well, not the end of the world! I already reached out to Kurt.

I have read somewhere, that it’s ok if the chain driving the oil pump is a bit lose, but mine seems really lose. Does this look ok?

I wish I had taken more photos, but anyways, clutch damper conversion went well. I was a amazed how tight the new rubber blocks fit. The older ones allowed for about 1 mm play between blocks and gear.
Tapping was easy, I did it by hand, and using the bolts from KM Carburetor (thanks again Kurt for the quick turnaround!) there wasn't any need to grind down the heads. Went on a short test ride last night and sounds much better already! Will take advantage of the beautiful Texas weather and go on a lunch ride today!
