Using 80 valve cover bolts on a 79 engine?

Post by toybldr »

I cant locate the valve cover bolts for my 79 engine but have a set from an 80 which are slightly different. Rather than buy a new set can the 1980 bolts be used?
Thank you.

The '80 bolts are slightly longer and use a thicker rubber gasket.
Saying that, i do not know if they can be used on a '79.

Hi,

It depends on which cam cover you have.

'79 covers have slightly "countersunk / recessed" openings for the bolts/ rubbers to locate in, the later covers have openings that are slightly raised. As a result, the rubbers and bolts are different to suit the cover (earlier bolts are slightly shorter to account for the rubbers being slightly recessed).

If you use the later (longer bolts) with the '79 rubbers and cover, they will bottom out and not seal it properly. If you use later bolts, with later rubbers on a '79 cover, you may just get away with it, but may still bottom out.

Paul.
