85 CBX 750 starter issues

Post by tel66 »

Hi ll, I have just got a 85 CBX750, it appears the starter clutch has gone as the starter just whirrs and doesn't seem to engage anything. I have an as new replacement starter clutch but am reluctant to strip the engine down to replace this but if I gotta I gotta.
I tried jump starting it and while I can rock the motor back and forth in gear if I put it in gear and try and jump it it doesn't engage at all it just keeps rolling then once stopped rocks the motor again? Is there some mechanism in play here or is this normal? Could it be that the starter clutch isn't to blame at all and its another engine chain that's to fault? thanks for any input.

It does sound similar to the common starter clutch problems on the '79-'83 DOHC F series.
They were relatively easy to fix.
From the sounds of it you know yours is buried.
Repair manual starting on page 160 shows the CBX750 in with the tranny.
