Oil filter housing bolt..

Post by GLHS60 »

Hi Guys!!

It's been resting many years but I'm getting my CBX road ready again.

With fresh gas and battery it started right up so I decided to change the oil and filter.

The bolt that holds the filter housing seems frozen in place and I'm seeking info on freeing it up.

With extreme force on the bolt it won't loosen but the oil filter housing seems to be trying to rotate.

Can the alloy filter housing be rotated or is it fixed in place??

My thinking is if it can rotate, I could try turning it along with the bolt at the same time.

I tried searching the forum for info. but couldn't find any related topics.

Any input is appreciated!!

Thanks
Randy

No, the housing won't spin off. You'll see that it has a locating tab in the top that prevents doing that. Keep trying, the bolt will come out. Then get a new one and DON'T over tighten it.

There should be fins on the engine and a flared flange on the housing to prevent the whole thing from turning.
An impact wrench would be best but if that option is not available some penetrating oil and whacks from a hammer on the head of the bolt might work.
The bond would be between the bolt flange and the filter housing.

I had this problem on a cb750. A squirt of penetrating oil where the bolt flange contacts the filter housing and soaking for a day solved it.
