Need some advice on my next (Head) steps

Post by Thunderdome74 »

Hi everyone

I need some advice from you regarding the next steps in getting my x 100%

I was worried about a hydrolock, so i did a COLD comp test and had around 130 across all 6.

I have ridden her around and even after short rides (hot day) there is a weep out the LHS head gasket, so it will be a head off and new gasket time

The bike has 67 000km so not a spring chicken, however it doesnt look as thou the engine has been opened.

I am in South Africa and when ordering stuff from overseas it can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months to arrive.
(we have a post office that seems to guess where things are to go)

I have been looking at piston sets from Cruizin image and am very tempted.
As well as their carb kits.

A head gasket is a given. I am just trying to get a list together of what elseis needed.
(i dont suppose there is a way to check bores without opening head?) as i hate the idea of dissasembling it all and then waiting 6 months (possibly) for pistons to arrive , but it might be the only option?

SO MY STEPS PLANNED ARE:
Head off
measure bores for out of round/wear
New pistons/rings
Hone/rebore
Valve stem seals
Check valvea sre seating /if not regrind
replace head and base gasket

Am i missing any vital component here? :text-feedback:

What else should i buy (gasket wise/ rubbers etc/ check)
Any links you could point me to ?
Threads that feature comprehensive head job ?

I realise this may have been covered before and i have been looking , but some links to items no longer exits or the pictures are now gone

I have put together a cb750 with some help from a mate, but am scared to do the x myself so will probably get a mate with a bikeshop to help,
he doesnt seem daunted at all by the cbx , so i should be in good hands

Again , thank you very much

Thorbjorn

Thor, engine rebuilds are out of my league but i have certainly read good things about the Cruizinimage big bore kits.
If Rol and Tony use them in their race engines, that is an excellent endorsement.
I would use the carb kits from Randakks if you think you need to rebuild your carbs.

The 130 compression check seems fine to me. The fact that the numbers are consistent for each cylinder is more important.
Have you heard a low-end rod knocking?

Do NOT buy the Cruzinimage carb kits, they are junk. The piston kits are very good.

Thunderdome, you have probably thought of it, but its a good idea to remove the sump pan and check/ clean the oil pump pick up gauze !

Good info. Thanks alot.
@ steve thanks read that many times... zI am hoping to get it done in one go
@phil, Tx , good to know.(i will go through the carbs when mike nixons book arrives)
@chris, good idea

ATM i am gingerly riding it around to see what comes up.
I think i def have a idle blockage as no 3 was a lower temp (90) compared to the others(180) when idling.
After a bit of a 4k+ rpm ride they were pretty consistant.

Plan is to replace head gasket (ordered Athena) and will then take a look see how the bores etc are.
Button it back up and order whats/if needed (waste of a head gasket ) but i dont want to sit around for a possible 6 months with the head open.

I just changed the oil (had gas in it due to overflowing carbs as well as being LOW, 3 odd litres).
I will be changing it fairly soon(when head gasket no1 arrives) so will check on the sump at the same time.

Thor
