Hi i had a problem with a CI big bore kit i fitted to my 73 kawasaki Z1 it smoked and burnt oil on all 4 pots straight after it was built when i stripped it i could not find a problem ring gaps were in spec all seemed well until i removed the oil control rings and inspected the spring ring that holds out the 2 oil rings it was too small in length so was not forcing out the control rings i ended up finding some Renault clio car rings the same size its now run perfect for last 2500 mile got to be careful with the CI parts

In my search I also found the Yamaha XS650 bunch were using car rings with there CI pistons.

And…BOOM ! That was FAST ‼️

Super impressed. One question though: I’m used to chrome-facing on the first compression ring. That’s what was on my original set of CI rings. These newest ones seem to have some sort of plasma coating (?). Does anyone have experience with these?

In the photos, original ring on the left, new one on the right.

Don’t think so, it’s a very hard surface.
