and another thing to consider when doing compression testing. Water cooled bikes are built to a much tighter tolerance then air cooled bikes because of the temp fluctuations. The CBX is also one of the hottest running bikes ever built. I've had oil temp guages on 3 different CBX's with the sending units in different places with the same results. 300+ degrees f on your average florida day. I'd be amazed at any used CBX that has 150lbs pressure. And I'd be amazed at anyone who can do one at operating temperature on a CBX.

Follow up report on compression

Post by HondaJohn »

THis is a follow up report on my compression problem of an 81 CBX that was not ridden much in the past 5 yrs. Valves were adjusted and the low cylinder compression came up from 106-130psi. All cylinders are not in the 130s so I dont think there is an internal problem. I anticipate finishing this project in about two weeks and then ride the hell out of it and I am relatively sure it will be fine.

Correction on Compression Follow Up

Post by HondaJohn »

I stated in my previous follow up message that the cylinder compression was NOT in the 130s, but should have said that all cylinders ARE in the 130psi range, now that the valves have been adjusted. Typo error.

Sounds like you'll be ready to ride the s**t out of it by Bike Week. I'm coming down with my wife and we're going to borrow one of Dan's CBX's. When we head back to California, Dan can show you how to change the oil, tires, and brake pads. Or mebbe I should take it easy on Dan's bike, he's coming to CA in July to ride one of my bikes in the border to border. Darn, I wish he was riding my bike first. :D Maybe we'll get together in Daytona?

Compression etc...

Post by HondaJohn »

Yeah, that's just what I have been waiting for - someone to show me how to change oil etc... after working on and building bike engines for 40 years. Can't wait to learn more......

Hondajohn, I don't think George's remark was suggesting that Dan should teach you something that you didn't know. Read the post carefully and consider George's signature line: If I rode it, it probably needs...

Yes, understand his comment and we have corresponded privately. The CBX teaches me something everytime I work on one.

Dan: I will be at the 24hr race in Daytona this weekend. After that we go to Key West for a week. We were thinking of making a stop in the Ft Meyers area on Monday on the way down. Stay there one night.
You care to get together?

Dan's CBX Problem

Post by HondaJohn »

Dan: I understand this guy does nothing but work on CBX's and he is in Florida. This came from a reliable CBX source. 352-494-7904 his name is Preston. I dont know anything about him but is supposed to be a CBX Xpert.
