Swingarm. Don't forget the small bikes.

Post by patzx12 »

I have decided to do a minor upgrade to my 78/79 bike.
I fitted a spare set of Prolink forks.
I was looking at swingarms for twin shock.
The problem is the CBX has a short swingarm, about 470-500 spindle to spindle.
Most swingarms are 550+
I have a Blackbird swingarm here and its not to bad a fit, it does increase the wheel base a bit. but it is wide.
I had a mooch around a local bike mechanics workplace and found a rear end.
L to R new - std - Blackbird.

I am not sure what the donor bike for the left swingarm is but probably a 90's Yam 250!
Have you seen the swingarm on some of these 250-400 bikes?
I weighed them and they are all about the same 4.5kg
Its a monoshock but it has 2 x 6mm lugs in the right position for the shock mounts.
I already decided to use a mono and TIG weld on shock mounts.
Plan is:
Beef up the shock mounts.
Gusset the front of the swingarm.
Mill the wheel slots and shorten the arm by 20mm

Another good option is the swingarm from the early 80s GS1100.
It is aluminum and about the same length as the Prolink arm. Shorter than a CB1100F swingarm, which a lot of people have used on early CBXes

From top to bottom:

CB1300/ Big One
1983 CB1100F
GS1100E
Prolink

I would have used a Prolink arm if i had one, super strong and easy to add shock mounts.
Its about 520 spindle to spindle.
The CB1000 is a long arm.

The Big One swingarm is also too wide at the pivot.
The GS1100 arm has shock mounts and is almost a bolt-on.

Agreed.
For me welding on lugs isn't a problem, i would take the prolink over the suzuki.
The prolink is a super strong arm and plenty of tyre room for shortening.
