Replacing Just the Mufflers on Stock Exhaust?

Post by OldGold »

I have a stock exhaust system on my 1980 CBX. The exh. pipes leading to the mufflers are in nice shape but both mufflers are dented and scratched beyond repair, according to a local rechrome shop. What are my options besides replacing the complete exhausts (too expensive)? My thought is to cut off the original mufflers and adapt some universal or salvage yard muffler from another bike. I want them to look good, not cost more than $500 and not have a negative affect on performance. Has anyone done this with success. I tried to find an answer by looking through this forum topic but did not find anyone that was trying to do what I want to do. Other than cosmetics, the current mufflers are quiet and perform perfectly. I am hoping to have them look as close to stock as possible or be an attractive alternative to the stock look.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. Pictures of what you have done would be great.

Howard
