Does anybody have an educated guess what the temperature is on the outside of the muffler part of the exhaust?

I don't have a guess but I do have a digital temp gauge that I can point and shoot a temp reading off my stock '81 exhaust if that helps you? I usually shoot my header pipes once in awhile to confirm all cylinders are firing. I have never recorded those temps but could. often wondered what THOSE temps should be as well on a "healthy" bike?

I am thinking of refinishing an exhaust for a bike other than a CBX and use high-temp engine paint applied with a gun. Just wonder whether it would last.

At the head, some where around 700-800F.
A guy i know was looking into wrapping his pipes and he did a bit of research. There are 3 temp. grades of wrap.
That was on a bike without a cat. conv. Apparently they get hotter

I am restoring an old VF1000R with a yosh system on it and had those pipes ceramic coated. will withstand the high temps and wasn't very expensive. you are limited to colors of course. perhaps that's a thought????

The headers on that exhaust are completely separate from the mufflers and they are perfectly fine. All I have to do is refinish the mufflers behind the collectors. I want to use a gloss black. All I can get is engine paint that withstands 600F according to the source.

VHT may have a header paint that from memory goes to 1200F but I am not sure if they have a gloss black. perhaps check their website, sorry I don't know how to post a link to it here. I really cant see the muffler sections getting to 600F though. good luck.

Thanks, Kent! That's what I ran into. There is no gloss black that I could find that goes much over 600°F. I may give it a try.

Mike, according to TomK http://www.tomscyclerecycling.com/ who does excellent powdercoating, the temp at the muffler/collector connection is 390F.
He has just done a set of 1100F mufflers in black.

This Por-15 high heat black is the only product I know of that works, you have to spray it on yourself though and its more satin the high gloss, you cut with Xylene to make it spray-able.

I have a high temp gloss black engine paint that I will spray with a gun. It is being mixed with urethane activator.

do you know where I would get more info on "spraying" this por15 product. I want to do a set of exhaust but am not too experienced at painting other than rattle cans!
the "satin" finish is exactly what i'm looking for.

Get it straight from the experts at Por 15, the techs are very helpfully, I have used a lot of their products from auto to resurfacing an old porcelain bath tub and they have been really helpful, Eastwood may have some info too they sell most of the Por-15 products. I did a set of VF500F pipes for a neighbor using his cheapo harbor freight spray gun and cut it with Xylene that I had left over from doing the bath tub with.
