Exhaust Stud Heli-coil Repairs

Post by Crazy Canuck »

I did a search and came up with squat.....

So....I just removed my exhaust system today to do some repairs, and noticed that one of the studs that has had a previous heli-coil repair was pulled out again destroying the repair. :angry-cussingblack:

I'm now faced with doing another repair job using an oversize insert, and am looking for guidance on which insert is most appropriate/best for this kind of repair where there's not a lot of meat left.

Any help is appreciated....

So you can't chase the old threads for the previous heli-coil?
Some info here on when and how to use over-sized.

No, It pulled those threads out too.

I think it going to be between the "BigSert" or the double helicoil, but I'm not sure which one is best for minimal host material.

Timesert has never failed me. Do it right and do it once. They hold great. The kit isn’t cheap but if you do it the way the instructions say it will work great. They have different lengths for that size as well.

Happened to me on my KZ1000, I took out a big chunk of Aluminium while (over) tightening the stud. I went to a local welding and machine shop. They cleaned the hole up then welded aluminium back on and then drilled and hellicoiled. It did the trick.
