Horn / switch

Have had my '82 for 7 years or so. It came with an aftermarket horn. Recently the horn works only intermittently. When I press the switch I can hear some "contacting" in the horn unit and intermittently the horn does what a horn is supposed to do. Otherwise I just hear the contact noise. If I operate the switch too much the yellow button becomes heated to the point it is too hot to touch but not melting.

Any advice? Do you think the problem is in the horn or the switch? If the switch, what are alternatives as the manual says they "must be replaced as assemblies"

My first guess is that you have too much current draw on the circuit. The horn could be defective or just pulling too much current for the bike's wiring/switch.

I would suggest trying another horn.

I suggest that you allow the handlebar switch to operate a remote relay capable of handling the increased current that the aftermarket horns require....

I have that on my 82 and works great. Sometimes though I have to wiggle the starter button before it will work.

Checking the switch is always a good idea, but if you do not have too much experience with taking that apart, I would recommend trying a different horn or cleaning the horn.

I too have aftermarket horns on my 82. That same symptom happened to me as well last year and I cleaned out the horn from the rust build up inside the horn or diaphram of the horn.

That solved my problem and has worked well since. That may not be your problem, but well worth looking at.
