Lost fire in cylinder #1

Post by Got3now »

Started bike to go for a ride and warmed it up. Not one minute into the ride it began to run poor.. When it cooled I took plugs out and found #1 was wet and fouled. All others were burning fine. Cleaned the plug and still ran poor. Put another plug in wire grounded it and started bike and found it has no spark in #1. Any thoughts on what might be the "likely" cause?

Plug wire between the coil and plug or the plug itself. Otherwise you would have lost #6 as well as they both fire from the same place.

I put another plug in the wire to test it so it must be the wire?

Unless #6 is dead as well :-)

On rare occasion one output from a coil can fail. But it is surely from the coil to the plug and no further upstream. Check wire connection at coil, wire itself, cap and plug. As Phil said also, make sure #6 is not dead also - if so, it can be a coil, pulser unit or spark unit (most likely).

Verified no spark in #1 or #6. Checked wires and caps and plugs. All good. How do I check the coil?

switch the spark wires from one of the other coils on to the dead coil and see if you have spark.

Almost 100% it's the spark unit. The most common failure by far.

It was the spark unit. Anyway to figure out which one is 1-6. And if so I would like to splice a working on it. Is that possible?

You can trace the wire colors with the shop manual. Yes, you can splice an individual unit to the early combo. EMS has detailed the procedure here somewhere.

What year/model CBX? If you have a wiring diagram, it should tell you which igniter is for which cylinder. Splicing in a new igniter on a 1979/80 is difficult as the wiring is not separate.

This may help. There is also a wiring diagram.

I have a 79 cbx1000. I will take a look at the wire diagram tonight and try to figure out which one is 1-6. I bought a couple of later model units. Hopefully I can cut, solder, and shrink wrap the new unit in. I hate the idea of not having a spare.
