Runs only with choke on

Post by Irishman53 »

Hi guys, new to this forum and to the cbx. I just picked up a 1981 cbx with 20,000 miles from original owner. Never ran ethanol gas and was garaged and run monthly. It's in pretty good shape and I'll restore it this winter. When I picked it up about 500 miles from my home I opened the choke and it started and runs great. It idled at 2500 or so and after warm and you close the choke it dies. You open the choke and it starts great and I rode it home the 500 miles with the choke on. Got about 39 miles per gallon average. Put some sea foam in on the way as well. While riding you can turn the choke off and it lowers the idle a little but no difference in run ability until you com to a stop and it dies unless the choke is opened. Any thoughts? I obviously will have to rebuild the Serbs this winter but any ideas on how to get the choke working? ( the choke bell crank does move)
Thanks ahead guys!
I started racing motocross at age 5 and was a professional Yamaha factory support rider when I quit at 18. Raced some 250 and superbike classes for a few years on and off.

The choke is working fine - the low-speed circuitry in the carbs is plugged. Very common and the carbs have to come off and be rebuilt. Read the volumes here about that before venturing in yourself.

my advice is to have the 6 pack rebuilt/cleaned the first time by an expert.

Over a grand to get them rebuilt by someone who knows what they're doing, you'll find them some of them here on the forum.

Unless you've rebuilt carbs before or are mechanically talented it's money well spent, these carbs are a pain in the butt to access and work on and essential to making the cbx purr.

I've been restoring 75 goldwings for some time and at this moment have 5 of them, all of which I've rebuilt the carbs on. I'll get Mike Nixons book and Randakkd kit and plug away this winter! I know they are going to be challenging for sure.

experience rebuilding carbs, Nixons book...you're good to go :D

what some cbx owners do is have a 2nd set of rebuilt/clean carbs ready to install, pull out the dysfunctional carbs and put in the clean and you're done in a day. Then clean the other set and store away until needed. I've been planning to do that myself but I haven't found a 2nd six pack at the right price as yet.

hmmm, I count 14 ?...

I just dropped 2k on various parts for the Z and the GS and I'm still negotiating for a Z fuel tank or two. To say the mrs isn't too pleased with me is an understatement and buying 6 pack right now wouldn't go over well. The price would have to be low if I were to buy at this time and I'm not going to insult you with a low ball offer but now I know who to ask when when the mrs cools down. :D

Somehow I made a mistake on the user name, should have been irishman1, reposted under that user name, found that the previous owner had installed the choke cable backwards and by reinstalling it correctly the choke works perfectly
